Reproduction
Mating occurs between May and August, with the eggs laid in September.
But, it is very hard to find a mate, one because to males fight over one female, and two because one or both males might die fighting. Also because males and females look alike. But during the month of July, the females use a "perfume", and once a male komodo walks by another komodo and smells nothing, he knows its not a female.Once the male spots the female, he attempts to attract her.. He does so by approaching her from behind, and then touching her on the cheek
with his tongue. He then licks her back, and then scratches her across
the back with his claws. This sound is hearable from 27 miles away. The female then lowers her head and puffs her throat to signal that it is ok to reproduce.Copulation takes about 12 minutes, and about a month later, the female is
ready to lay her eggs. She picks a sandy area were she can lay her eggs, she may lay up to 20 eggs in pile. Once the babies are laid, they are usually 30 cm long, and on there own the rest of there lives, and take about 2 or 3 months to develop attributes such as, bacteria in their saliva.
